John Pusateri’s manipulated (sometimes obliterated) images of birds comment on the complex history of animal preservation, speciation and extinction. He highlights the irony of living things destroyed in order that they are better known, catalogued, and preserved.

His work not only engages in creative image making, but also adds to our knowledge of local ecology; all the while raising issues around biodiversity and conservation, and more universal comments about loss and death.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, John Pusateri has participated in numerous exhibitions in The USA, Canada, Costa Rica, England, Japan and Mexico. In 2004, Pusateri moved to NZ to undertake a Master’s degree at Elam School of Fine Arts. In 2008, he opened Auckland Print Studio, a professional lithography studio which is involved in projects with professional artists and design-based practitioners. He was recently awarded the prestigious 2010 Black Church Print Studio Residency in Ireland and was a finalist in the Waiheke Art Award in 2009, 2010 and 2011; the 2010 Wallace Art Award and the WSA New Zealand Painting and Printmaking award from 2010 to 2012 inclusive. Pusateri currently lives and works in Auckland.
