Janet de Wagt is an Ashburton born artist who has lived and painted throughout the world. Janet’s paintings reflect the landscape at the ‘bottom of the world’. She paints on-site in all weathers; rain, hail or shine, capturing the mood and emotion in the southern most depths of New Zealand. Janet paints images we drive past, places we call home - New Zealand raw and unfiltered. Each painting is unique with its own energy exploring Janet’s passion for the environment. Completing the painting on location is a performance piece in itself.

Some of these large paintings in the exhibition of ‘Painting of the Land’ are about people in the landscape. “The more I paint in the landscape on location the more I wonder and question the role of people on that landscape - who planted that tree there and why? How have people using the land affected it and how has the land been changed.” - Janet de Wagt

Opening & artist talk: 21 April, 1:30pm.
