The pohutukawa are in bloom, the sun is shinning and the residents of Russell are once again raising hell! That is to say the usually quaint, charming village in the Bay of Islands is bringing back to life the days when Kororareka was known as the Hell Hole of the Pacific!

Step into history with a wild and woolly weekend of fun in Russell when the Hell Hole of the Pacific again turns back time to 1830 -1847.

Mark the calendars for the weekends of 15-16 December, 19-20 January and 23- 24 February.

It is then the streets of Kororareka will come alive with characters like Joel Polack and Ben Turner whose disdain for each other led to the first duel in New Zealand. Meet our missionaries, gamblers, townspeople, temperance workers and flirtatious strumpets. Special additions to this annual event are the "Strumpets' Kissing Booth", the chance to put rascals into the stocks, a guided history walk through the village following the footsteps of some of Kororaeka's most illustrious residents, and the seafaring songs of a shipwrecked sailor!

Street Theatre performances commence at 11:00am, other activities are ongoing throughout the day.

The Delectable, Delightful Drink Concoction Contest is on Saturday the 15th between 3 and 6pm. People can register to vote beginning at 2:45pm and Hell Hole Headquarters, on the corner of Cass and York Streets.
