Hiking Auckland

Hello all,

This is a coastal and bush tramp/hike of about 5km which is an easy-moderate day depending on your fitness, inevitably this sort of thing is up to you, to choose a walk that's right for you, but this hike is not as demanding as others that we have done.

I've been leading groups tramping in to the Auckland Regional Parks and other places of interest for more than ten years, mainly the Waitakere Ranges, and I'm now an approved operator/hiking guide recommended by Auckland Council.

I'm also a member of the NZ Mountain Safety Council and follow a health and safety plan for your peace of mind hiking or bush walking with me.

This hike near Piha Beach is a very enjoyable walk close to the Tasman sea and wild west coast beach called Karekare where you'll visit its black sand beach for lunch and maybe a visit to its big waterfall and toilets.

This hike starts just south of Piha Beach, above the beach locals know as Mercer Bay, which we walk past... a secret beach most people never knew was there when they see it... but we don't actually get down to it on this day. However the cliff tops have spectacular views out over the Tasman Sea and if you have read the Sunday Herald over the weekend, it says in an article on Secret Beaches to visit... "If you think popular west coast beaches such as Piha and Karekare are wild and remote, you ain't seen nothing yet, Mercer Bay eclipses them all".

There are some bush tracks as well, so hiking /tramping is part of the day and there are several ups and down therefore you'll get a good day's walking in this area. But the first hour is open on good well formed tracks with extensive views out to sea from some of the highest exposed coastline in the Waitakere Ranges... and on a clear day you can view as far south as Whatipu.

So this is a good walk for beginners, or those of you wanting an easier day... Or you simply wish to escape the hustle of city life for the chance to refresh the mind and body, as well as get some exercise.

Bring your normal hiking/tramping gear, pack a lunch, thermal under layers to keep warm and bring a rain jacket etc, and wear boots or running shoes with good grip. Please don't wear denim jeans.

Meet; carpark at end of Te Ahuahu Road, off Piha Road by the large cell phone tower at 10am this Saturday.

Bring your camera and a smile!

Toilet at start of track and at lunchtime. Safe carparking.

Hike is about 5 hours with plenty of stops to take in the views.

Allow an hour to drive there from Auckland City or North Shore or South Auckland or see website for carpooling options when you join.

See www.meetup.com/hikingauckland for more details!

Free to join, but hikes cost $10 pp on the day you hike with us... and please bring cash on the day.

This event is for adults only, and no dogs are welcome.

Kind regards,
