Fashion at War is a touring exhibition exploring the dramatic effect the Second World War had on the way people dressed in New Zealand and tells the story of a country determined to keep looking its best in the worst of times.

‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ as the saying goes and wartime shortages fostered a variety of skills especially ingenuity and creativity. This exhibition re-establishes the value of recycling and reuse and therefore has strong relevance for society today.

Fashion at War looks at the influence of military uniform on clothing design; how rationing effected the look of clothes and manufacturing techniques; the use of dress as propaganda; the influence of Hollywood glamour on War-time dressing, and the development of clothing associated with women taking on War work.

Taupō Museum wishes to thank Creative Taupō for funding assistance to bring Fashion at War to our community.
