Blues music originated in the deep South of the United States and is known for its soulful rhythms and lyrics infused with tales of sorrow and hardship.

Eternal Blues, by local artist Fabiola Barba, uses pencil and paper to produce beautifully drawn portraits of some of the world's most well known blues and jazz performers. The ten works include images of Billie Holliday, Koko Taylor, Gary Davis Jr, and Memphis Minnie. In addition to these famous personalities the exhibition includes images that reflect the emotions and feelings expressed through blues music.

Barba says she is “searching for the blues feeling, an essence of the human expression in its most elemental form”.

Born in Mexico in 1975, Barba was a graphic designer by trade. Her first role was at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico where she developed a passion for the past and its influence on changing lifestyles.

The exhibition will be on display at the Bathhouse Café, Rotorua Museum from 21 December 2012 until 20 February 2013.
