This Night Never Sleeps is an intimate retrospective look at the music scene in Aotearoa, spanning almost 20 years. A self-taught image maker, EJ Mathers (aka foto.graffito) left home at a young age. He quickly fused his two main passions - his eclectic taste in music and his love of photography - into one obsessive pastime. This exhibition is a celebration of amateur photography as both artist and historic document.

"I remember picking up a copy of Glen E. Friedman's Fuck You Heroes when I was like fourteen; the book was a life changing experience. Most kids that age took photos of their dog or their Grandma; I liked to take photos of bands. Before I started getting published I'd bribed security guards, forged press passes and gig tickets, jumped fences and lied just to get into photograph shows. I've been knocked out, beaten up and chased by security, broken cameras, teeth and bones all in the name of music documentary. The genre is akin to a living breathing wild animal, an unforgiving mistress, first three songs no flash..."

"The most difficult part of collating images for the show has been the editing process. I have unashamedly settled for a broad mix of photographs, ranging from some taken when I was fourteen, through to events documented earlier this year. This is my first solo exhibition after graduating from Unitec with a Diploma in Photography; I hope you enjoy the show as much as I enjoyed my misspent youth."
