Now in its 9th year, the ECHO Walking Festival is once again gearing up for a busy two weeks of walking, 10th April to 22 April.

Be prepared for wet feet at the start and end of this! The Mt Eliza track drops down off Thompson's Track into the Waitekohe Stream, crosses it and sidles above the stream along an old pack track constructed about the turn of the 20th century to service mining activity. After about 30 minutes, there is a turn off from the pack track which goes to the mine and the summit of Mount Eliza. The 100m sidetrack to the mine leaves this track after another 30 minutes. There are several open-cut shafts and adits visible on the route, so care must be taken. Some gold was discovered in the area, and prospectors put several shafts and drives into Mt Eliza (the longest being 187 metres long), but the various mining attempts proved uneconomic. After about another half hour's steep ascent on the main track, the summit is reached with glimpses through the bush of the distant sea and main Kaimai range.

You must be well prepared when tramping, especially on the longer day walks. Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.
