Among atheists and academic philosophers the near universal consensus is no. Dr Harrison thinks they are mistaken. He is going to argue that morality consists in the commands of a God, a ‘Metaethical’ view known as ‘Divine Command Theory’.

It follows that if anything is right or wrong, God exists. It also follows that if God does not exist, nothing is right or wrong. Atheism or morality - take your pick!

Dr Gerald Harrison is a lecturer in philosophy at Massey University. He has research interests in ethics and the metaphysics of free will.
