Documentary Edge

Welcome to the 7th edition of Documentary Edge Festival, Australasia’s leading international documentary film festival. 72 films from New Zealand and around the world have been selected for the 2012 Festival.

Alongside familiar sections: New Zealand, World Cinema, Culture Vultures, Heroes & Icons, Shorts, and Generations (previously All in The Family), we are introducing a new category, Human Rights. Two special sections are in the spotlights this year: Future Watch, covering the developments and discussions affecting the world’s future, and Arab Spring, a collection of films reflecting the emerging voices of the Arab world.

And there is more. As part of the Culture Vultures section, we invite you on an exciting journey through the world of slam poetry. Enjoy live poetry sessions and screenings of our first online video slam poetry competition.

The Festival opens with The Revenge of the Electric Car, the follow-up to the hit film Who Killed the Electric Car? We are honoured to have director Chris Paine attending. Closing the Festival is Life in Movement, a tribute to the brilliant dancer, Tanja Liedtke who tragically died a few days before taking up the position of Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company.

All 72 films in the Festival are in competition and the winners will be announced at the Documentary Edge Gala Awards on the 3rd of May 2012.

In Auckland, the Festival will screen at Event Cinemas Newmarket and we will introduce lunch time screenings at Auckland Art Gallery.
