Paula Morris’ and Stephanie Johnson’s new novels each centre on a real nineteenth-century ancestor – Paratene Te Manu and Elizabeth Horelock Smith respectively.

Rangatira (2011) and The Open World (2012) are imaginative reconstructions of the lives and times of these forebears in Aotearoa New Zealand and in England.

How far do these tales deviate from historical ‘truth’? Is fictionalising real lives morally sound in the first place? Just how spooky does it get?

In conversation with New Zealand novelist Rachael King.
