The life and aspirations of celebrated local sculptor Delani Brown will be encapsulated in his first solo exhibition, Te Reinia, which is on display at the Taupō Museum and Art Gallery from this weekend.

Through a composition of songs, insights, images and sculptures, Te Reinia takes a look at Brown’s background. Te Reinia (Gentle Rain) is a Maori expression that describes the spiritual blessings that are bestowed by the heavens.

In this exhibition, Brown shares his natural gifts and diverse creative talents. He uses skills acquired through traditional methods of learning from tribal elders as well as from life experiences.

As a carver, Brown’s understanding and knowledge of Whakairo (the ancient art of Māori carving) is governed by deep rooted traditions and ancient lore. His work takes you on a personal journey, offering insight into understandings that have guided him through his life. The ability to share this process has been a catalyst to his art pieces being sought after by clients from around the world.

Brown is also a competent songwriter. Music has played an important role in his life and the lyrics displayed tell a story of struggle and survival.

Rarely does an artist share the path their life has taken in such an intimate way.
