Deidre Copeland was born on a sheep farm in rural Southland and now lives in Central Otago surrounded by its stunning landscapes. It is, however, not the face of the earth that attracts her eye but the remarkable faces of its characters. She is renowned for her large scale, beautifully detailed portraits. The region’s unique landscape is reflected in the very geography of their faces.

Since returning home from seven years travelling the world as an illustrator, teacher, photographer and painter, exhibiting in both Tokyo and London, Deidre has enjoyed rapid and remarkable success. Major art awards, extensive media coverage, plus a growing list of patrons have confirmed Deidre as one of New Zealand’s leading portrait painters. She has also gained the esteem of well known New Zealand artist, Grahame Sydney who has been a mentor to Deidre. Multitalented, she has also just published her first children’s book, titled ‘Moon Cow’.

In this latest series ‘Birthmark’, Deidre is again exploring the landscape within the human face, with these new works marrying native New Zealand flora with the smooth youthful faces of her models. With subtle, limited colour palettes and soft feminine compositions these portraits take on a unique surreal quality. Each painting having a strong connection to the land, their birthplace.

Deidre has exhibited in over ten public galleries throughout NZ, including the National portrait gallery in Wellington. ‘Birthmark’ will be her first solo show in Auckland at the Parnell Gallery.

Deidre’s exhibition runs from the 27th March to 10th April 2012.
