Ensemble Polymnia, conducted by Sarah Bisley, will repeat this programme by popular demand! Works featured are the famous Albinoni-Giazotto "Adagio", from The Messiah the prophetic "For behold..The People that walked in darkness", Bach's moving cantata "Ich habe genug" and the glorious "Stabat Mater" of Pergolesi.

Soloists on this occasion are Igor Arefyev (violin), Jarvis Dams (bass), Elizabeth Mandeno (soprano), Sheridan Williams (alto) and Felicity Hanlon (oboe).

The "Concert Spirituel" was one of the first public concert series in existence, beginning in Paris in 1725 and spreading to other major European capitals. Concerts such as these were founded to provide entertainment for the season of Lent and on religious holidays, when other spectacles such as the Paris Opera, Comedie-Francaise and Comedie-Italienne were closed. They featured a mixture of sacred choral works and virtuosic instrumental pieces, and for many years took place in the magnificently-decorated "Salle des Cent Suisses" in the Tuileries Palace.

Our programme largely holds to these traditions, even following the original starting time of 6.00 p.m.
