Early missionary William Colenso slipped off the historical map, to be known only as a difficult person, a bristlingly square peg in a round hole.

In 2011 Peter Wells published The Hungry Heart - Journeys with William Colenso which essentially rewrote Colenso's biography.

He re-emerged as a deep thinker about colonial impact, a feeling man in a painfully awkward marriage and the father to New Zealand botany.

Wells discusses his “tour de force” (The NZ Herald) of a book, looking at how he accessed the hungry heart of this once-forgotten man.

In conversation with Francis McWhannell.
