Muster (Rushes), made for documenta (13), 2012, is an experimental film work set in the former Benedictine monastery in Breitenau, near Kassel. In the past 150 years the monastery, which was first established in the 12th century, has undergone many changes. It was converted into a prison, then a concentration and work camp during World War II, a girls’ reformatory, then an open psychiatric clinic.

Originally shown as a three-screen installation, von Wedemeyer has reconfigured the work to show as a one screen linear sequence.

Muster (Rushes) layers three time periods in the 20th century – 1945, 1970 and 1994 to recount different stories of habitation, incarceration and liberation. Von Wedemeyer blurs timelines and stories by placing the three main actors as different characters in each time period, further complicating the three different scenarios playing out in the same location of Breitenau.
