Luminary historian Dame Anne Salmond speaks with Paul Diamond about her internationally acclaimed triumph Bligh: William Bligh in the South Seas (2011), a history inspired by her research for the earlier Aphrodite’s Island (2010), a detail of European contact with fabled Tahiti.

In her new, beautifully told story, controversial figure William Bligh is revealed, for the first time, not only as the captain of the mutinous Bounty but as an important ethnographer and an early Governor of New South Wales.

Bligh adds to the paradoxical legacy of this infamous seaman and captures more definitively than ever the excitement, drama and terror that surrounded him.

In conversation with Paul Diamond.
