Zimmerman Contemporary Art Gallery has exhibited Beth McGill’s feather paintings for just over a year. During this time, a range of New Zealand birds have featured on McGill’s plumose canvases, from the treasured kiwi to the plucky tui.

Her deft and delicate feather paintings are the product of a keen eye, light touch and steady hand.

With close attention to detail, McGill’s birds appear watchful and aware - seemingly noting our presence, but determined to hold their ground.

Whether it is a soft-eyed morepork or gentle kereru, there appears to be a resigned acceptance of human intrusion into their world. This is the irony inherent in McGill’s feathered works - these birds we love regard us warily, careful to remain apart, as if knowing no good will come of being too close to man.

As in the natural world, the native birds at Zimmerman share space with introduced species. Thus a kingfisher perches only a short distance from a fantail, while a pukeko struts forth not far from an inquisitive kea. This curious menagerie of the native and exotic is testament to the artist’s skill, McGill capturing the personality of both common and endangered birds.

Based in Palmerston North, McGill holds a Diploma of Art and Creativity (with honours).

We welcome you to call by Zimmerman this month to view McGill’s most recent feather works.
