Auditions for ‘Entertaining Angels’ by Richard Everett.
Director Peter Meikle
Season: 14 July to 4 August, with matinees Sunday 15 & 22 August, 6pm.

Richard Everett’s new play was written in 2009 and premiered at The Chichester Festival. It is a story of grief, regret, lack of communication within a family, and buried secrets surfacing too late - but the laughter constantly bubbles to the surface giving full value to Everett’s witty, perceptive and very funny script.

Recently widowed Grace is now the Vicar’s widow, contemplating her life of devotion to duty while the new vicar and his wife (sorry - the new vicar and her husband) examine their new home. After so many years of being the dutiful and busy vicar’s wife, she is now bereft of husband, home and job. Unwilling to let go of her past, Grace constantly converses with her deceased husband - which obviously causes her family some concern - and, as she paces angrily to and fro, feels she is now wandering aimlessly. Husband Bardolph reminds her that Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. “Only because there were men in charge” she snaps back, “and they wouldn’t stop to ask the way!”

Her eccentric missionary sister has arrived from Africa to support her in her hour of need, but during the sisterly bickering, recalling resentments from childhood, it is revealed that she has a 30-year-old son...by Grace’s now deceased husband!

The play received widely positive reviews, receiving five stars from the Edinburgh Guide, with The Sunday Times writing that "Richard Everett has written a warm, glowing, serious comedy, like an Ayckbourn play finished by JM Barrie", while the London Evening Standard reviewed the play as a “very English comedy with some real emotion...scratch the surface and you’ll find interesting undercurrents rippling the water. Adultery, miscarriage, divorce and deception interestingly handled all, are just some of the problems that writer Richard Everett beds down among well-received jokes...This is a sure-fire hit - a boulevard comedy that is both entertaining and affecting...This is a funny, touching and genuinely thought-provoking comedy and offers the company wonderful roles to really work into."

Grace - an ageless 50/60-something, elegant, witty, acerbic, defensive, fiesty, dynamic, energetic, vulnerable.
Ruth - Grace's sister, of similar age and slightly gauche, plainer and spinsterish with bitter disappointment lines etched on a fading palette of a face.
Bardolph - Grace's deceased husband, aged 60-something.
Jo - Grace's daughter, early 30s. The best of Bardolph and Grace, vulnerable, brittle.
Sarah - new vicar, early 30s, ambitious, vocal, fragile.

The rhythm and cadence of the play does mean it will need the essential mid-Counties English accent and rehearsal coaching will be available. This is elegant, snappy dialogue, and requires utterly precise timing and actors who can learn lines easily and work through the many layers needed to develop the nuances and relationships that will be at the core of the play’s communication success.

Rehearsals will be May/all of June and opening July 14. Rehearsals usually are scheduled Tuesday/Thursday nights and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. Rehearsal schedule is available on request.

These will take the form of open audition working from the script and it is important that potential cast have read the play and are able to talk through character ideas and motivations. If it is your intention to audition, please be at the theatre at 11am. Perusal copies of the script are available from the theatre: 534-1406.

Peter Meikle’s last production for HLT was Heroes in 2011, and he has an extensive background in direction, teaching, design and performance. For further details contact the director: petermeikle@xtra.co.nz or mobile 027 278 2468.
