Private Lives written by Noel Coward, directed by Cynthia Cahill.

Synopsis

“Private Lives” is described as being a 1930s comedy of manners in three acts. It was written by Noel Coward allegedly in four days while recovering from the flu! He also composed the well known song “Someday I’ll Find You” especially for the play. The story focuses on a divorced couple, Amanda and Elyot, who are honeymooning in adjacent rooms in the Hotel Deauville in France, with their new spouses, Victor and Sybil. Amanda and Elyot, after the initial shock of seeing each other across the balcony, realise they still love each other so run off together to a flat in Paris, but soon find out that they can neither live with or without each other. During the ensuing arguments which reach a crescendo in the 2nd Act, a French maid is introduced – she speaks entirely in French and is a wonderful character role.

Ages will depend on a number of factors but mainly Sybil and Victor should be credible new spouses for Amanda and Elyot although Sybil is 7 years younger than Elyot and slightly naïve. All roles are major with English accents (except for the maid, who is French).

List of characters
• Amanda Prynne: 30-40, attractive
• Elyot Chase: 30-40, charming.
• Sybil Chase: early to mid 20s, must look younger than Elyot and Amanda
• Victor Prynne: 30-40
• Louise: The French maid, any age

Season: opens 9th – 30th June 2012
