Acis & Galatea is a delightful, short pastoral opera and depicts the Greek mythological story of the love between the shepherd Acis and the nymph Galatea. As with all good stories there is a monster (called Polyphemus) who also admires Galatea and he eventually kills Acis in frustration as Galatea spurns his advances. A chorus of nymphs, swains and shepherds add to the drama. Acis and Galatea was the pinnacle of pastoral opera in England. Indeed several writers, such as musicologist Stanley Sadie, consider it the greatest pastoral opera ever composed. The overture begins happy and bubbling with exuberance until the opening chorus which proclaims the 'pleasure of the plains'. The work contains some of Handel's most loved airs such as Polypheme's "O ruddier than the cherry". In a first for HC&Q, we will perform the entire work semi-staged (without scores) which will add to the appeal.
