American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) and Improvised Tribal Style Belly Dance (ITS) are a modern style of belly dance which first originated in the US around the 1980s. Tribal style is based on a set of defined moves and combinations which dancers learn and then use to improvise in a group. Tribal has influences from a number of other dance styles, especially flamenco, which contribute to its look and feel, particularly its posture; however most of the core technique is similar to other belly dance styles. Tribal is great fun to do as its focus is on interacting with your fellow dancers. It is also a fantastic way to learn some improvisation skills as it is very structured and done as a group.

This short course will provide an introduction to tribal style dance, including breaking down a number of the basic slow and fast movements, learning to cue movements to other dancers for group improvisation as well as basic group formations.

Classes will be split into a technique and an improvisation component to ensure that there is plenty of time in each class to put your new skills into practice.
