The Southland Wetlands Working Party is helping the National Wetlands Trust of New Zealand to organise the 2012 National Wetlands Symposium.

The National Wetland Trust is a non-profit organisation established in 1999 to increase the appreciation of wetlands and their values by all New Zealanders. The Trust aims are to:

1. Increase public knowledge and appreciation of wetland values
2. Increase understanding of wetland functions and processes
3. Ensure landowners and government agencies commit to wetland protection, enhancement and restoration

The symposium is a bi-annual event held in a different region of New Zealand each time. The 2012 symposium will be held in Invercargill, New Zealand, home to the internationally renowned Ramsar wetlands known as the Awarua wetlands complex and Waituna Lagoon.

The symposium will include a wide range of presentations on the following categories:
1. Effective community engagement
Tools, techniques and learning for getting people interested and involved with wetlands and communicating effectively.

2. Regulatory vs. non regulatory approaches
Rules, regulations, incentives, and other approaches that have worked (or not) to protect wetland values.

3. Communicating science to the public
How we share, communicate and engage people with scientific learning.

4. Integrated management of wetlands for ecosystem outcomes
Integrated management, what works and why, what are good ecosystem outcomes, how do we monitor these effectively?

There will also be a series of field trips to Waituna Lagoon and Rakatu Wetlands. Attendance also includes a symposium dinner with entertainment. This will be a fantastic 3 day event, particularly for academics, students, community group volunteers, landowners and anyone who has in interest in protecting wetlands.
