In conjunction with The Salvation Army in Tauranga, the Cambridge Heights Shopping Center will be holding a fun family event, the Tauranga community charity drive.

- Event features: we encourage you to bring donations of non-perishable food, new toys, and cash donations in exchange for activities, goods, and services on the day including; bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, face painting, raffle draws, $10 men's haircuts, lolly scramble feat. Santa!

All proceeds go to The Salvation Army Tauranga to help local Tauranga families in need this Christmas.

Christmas is a time for giving, and though many of us may think first of a wholesome Christmas dinner and presents under the tree on Christmas day – The Salvation Army Tauranga knows all too well that many families in Tauranga will not be able to afford these simple luxuries this Christmas. A collective of local business owners in the Cambridge Heights Shopping Center understand this unfortunate situation and have come together to give of their time, products, and services to raise support for local Tauranga families in need this Christmas.

While entry into the event is free, there will be many opportunities for local Tauranga residents to contribute donations of new toys, cash donations, and non-perishable food items such as; packets of biscuits, long life milk, pasta & rice, canned goods, as well as other non-perishables to the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas drive.

The event is community focused, with the parking at the shopping center being cordoned off to make room for a large bouncy castle, face painting, a sausage sizzle, music, raffle draws, and special visit from Santa.

Salvation Army Community Ministries Manager Rob Bartlett explains that all donations made to The Salvation Army are gratefully received, but encourages the Tauranga community to think carefully about the items they wish to donate at the event; “Food, toys, cash – we need all of it. We do get a lot of very similar items of food during these drives, and it would be helpful if we had more variety so we were able to put together better meal plans for our families”. Mr Bartlett says it’s important that members of the community do not pre-wrap any donations; “We have a lot of donations to sort through in a short period of time, and we need to best allocate the goods received to the right families, so having to unwrap & re-wrap the gifts is time consuming.’ Mr Bartlett adds; “It's important that donations of toys are brand new, unwrapped toys covering a variety of age brackets. It can be quite hard for a youngster to receive a second hand toy for Christmas”.

A collection of businesses have generously offered services and products towards the fundraising effort. McSwiggans Irish Bar will be hosting a sausage sizzle ‘swap’ on the day, encouraging members of the community to provide a new toy, non-perishable food item, or cash donation in exchange for a yummy hot sausage on bread. Envy Hair Salon will be offering men’s haircuts for just $10.00 on the day of the event, with all money raised being donated. Otumoetai Mowers & Cycles will be donating a portion of the proceeds from any bicycle or accessory sold on the day. Cambridge Heights Dairy will be donating a portion of the sale of any ice cream or milkshake at the event.

Each store in the Cambridge Heights Shopping Center is also available as a drop off point for donations to be made prior to the event. The event itself will be the final day for collection of donation items.
