The Match: Portraits of New Zealand Rugby Players
Photographs by David Matches
Opening hours 10.30-4.30, daily.

The Match is an exhibition of portraits of New Zealand rugby players. 100 life size, colour photographs by British cinematographer David Matches on show at The New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Shed 11, Queens Wharf, Wellington Waterfront.

For the past six years during the winter months he has worked to document rugby in New Zealand. His subjects are from every level of the game - small rural clubs right through to the All Blacks. Maori, Pakeha and Pacifika players from all across the country, of all ages and levels of fame, fortune and obscurity feature. The players are photographed immediately after the match, often exhausted, mud-spattered and bruised. This series of insightful portraits captures the essence of New Zealand’s rugby culture in all its diversity and forms a bridge between art, sport and psychology in the land where rugby is king.
