Join us on beautiful Waiheke Island on the Hauraki harbour, about 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland. Waiheke is the second-largest of all the Hauraki Gulf islands and is a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves. The team will be carrying out conservation at spectacular Whakanewha, a 270 hectare park covered with mature stands of kohekohe/taraire forest and containing a large wetland home to some uncommon birds, such as bittern, banded rail, spotless crake and the endangered New Zealand dotterel. Whakanewha is steeped in Maori and European history. The flat land was cultivated by Maori for centuries, once supplying the growing needs of early Auckland. Above the beach's rocky promontory is the remains of an extensive pa (Fortified village). Near the Poukaraka wetland you can see the remains of the hearth from a 19th century settler's cottage. Conservation tasks will include track work and bait line management.

If you would like to help on this project you can join for as many days as you like. Gloves and all tools and are provided. Volunteers just need to bring their lunch, a raincoat and sturdy footwear.
