‘An Ocean of Silence’ is a major solo exhibition by Italian New Zealand sculptor, Chiara Corbelletto.

This installation exhibition will bring together recent series of work that explore concepts of space – from the sub-atomic to deep space – along with scientific theory which the artist expresses through pattern.

This exhibition is both a survey of recent work by an important New Zealand artist and draws attention to the Italian contribution to Western art, culture and history. It gives form to complex scientific theory, the origins of which may be attributed to the greatest Italian scientist, Galileo Galleli. While Galileo is regarded as the father of modern science, this international reputation may often supersede his Italian identity.

By exploring the fundamental principles of modern science with visual reference to Italian design and pop culture, Corbelletto draws attention to this and other legacies. The result is an elegant and refined expression of Italian cultural identity that also invites the viewer to consider the many other influences that may be credited to Italy in our everyday life.

Artist floortalk: Saturday 10 September at 2 pm

Sponsored by: Irving Smith Jack Architects, Nelson
