The Manuka Hunnies blend the strong with the sweet - sweet and edgy vocals, spirited and inventive fingerstyle and slide guitar; strong original compositions and fresh interpretations of choice covers.

Lynette Diaz, American-born and Christchurch-based singer/songwriter, launched herself into the NZ folk music scene with the debut of her 2008 release, ‘Lyrics in My Head’. Her song ‘Living Before Dying’ made impressions, garnering two international honourable mentions in the Unisong and Peacedriven Songwriting Competitions.

In late 2009, Lynette began collaborating with finger-style guitarist Susan L. Grant, arguably one of the most inventive female blues and folk guitarists in New Zealand. In 2011, Susan has already taken a coveted instrumental award at the prestigious NZ Golden Guitars.

Lynette’s strong vocal presence and songwriting skill, and Susan’s original arrangements and instrumentals, meld succinctly and harmonically into musical resonance.

In addition to their original music, these honeybees know how to fuse fresh and inventive covers into their special Manuka blend. And the ingredients keep getting better!

These two artists performed throughout 2010 using their own names, but as a duo package. In June 2010, they collaborated with two local female singer-songwriters for a special performance at the Christchurch Folk Music Club. Diana Hickey and Lori-Ellen Grant provided beautiful backing harmonies for several songs on the night, and from this performance, the seeds of the group, Manuka Hunnies, were born.

Susan and Lynette make up the core of the Manuka Hunnies, and 2011 sees the addition of drummer/backing vocalist Misty Pencils, along with seasoned musician Pauline Richards on harmonica/backing vocals. Both Misty and Pauline play often in the 'Hunnies' line-up. Newest to the Hunnies line-up, Mayzie Cocco Wallen on viola/backing vocals.

Think of the Manuka Hunnies as a musical female collective, and with that, there’s bound to be more additions and musical surprises along the way!
