Warkworth Walks

Mahurangi, Matakana, Leigh and Kawau, the hidden gems of Auckland. Experience parts of the Te Araroa walkway, Mt Tamahunga, pristine beaches, marine and native bush sanctuaries, artists in their studios and the rare opportunity to walk through private land usually inaccessible to the public.

After the success of the two previous walking festivals in 2009 and 2010, Warkworth Walks have chosen the best of previous years and added some great new experiences in 2011. Eleven spectacular guided trails over two days, all with limited numbers, some available both Saturday and Sunday however others are single days and selling fast.

From last year we include:
Tawharanui Sanctuary sponsored by TOSSI. TOSSI guides will lead through the ecology bush and give you the opportunity to observe rare ducks at the dam, bellbirds in the bush, robin on the roost, dotterel in the dunes and kiwi nesting sites in the kauri.

Sandspit wharf walk via the beautiful coastline to Brick Bay Wines, the jewel like Glass House and the Sculpture Trail. From there walk over private land for a rare opportunity to view Virginia King’s amazing land and earth sculptures before returning to Sandspit wharf.

Mahurangi. Mita Bay to Cudlip Point a photographer’s delight, add in Ransom Wines for tastings and picnic platters and what more could you ask for.

Vineyard Trail 2009 version. Walk between Hyperion, Takatu and Omaha Bay vineyards, learn about the winemakers, taste their wines and enjoy a vineyard platter.

Mt Tamahunga. For strong walkers only, this great bush-clad mountain climb is guided by experienced trampers. The summit offers superb views, north to Pakiri and Whangarei Heads, east and south to Omaha Bay, Kawau Island, Warkworth and as far as Auckland on a clear day.

New Te Araroa Walkway offering. For strong walkers starting at Puhoi and tramp via beautiful Dunns Bush.

There are other walks to view on the website however the limited numbers in each group and the growing popularity of our walking festival means you should book early to avoid disappointment. No bookings taken on day of walks.
