Auckland Museum comes alive on Thursday 6 October for LATE - an evening of stimulating discussion and lively entertainment.

Bill Pearson's 1952 essay Fretful Sleepers still stands as a damning indictment of New Zealand's urge toward conformity and distrust of difference. We are a different country now -- but are we any more cognisant of our margins?

Who is excluded in the "new" New Zealand? Who can't move freely, get an education and a job? Who is not protected by the bill of rights? With burgeoning youth unemployment, is the archetypal "great place to bring up kids" becoming a tough place to be young? And how are things out there on the margins anyway?

Curated by journalist and Media 7 presenter Russell Brown, this special LATE is a night of inspired discussion, a rolling slideshow and wild cabaret featuring glam drag queens. Brown brings together an eclectic mix of panelists – comedian Philip Patston, columnist David Cohen, whose recent memoir on living with an autistic family member has won wide acclaim, Labour Party's candidate for Auckland Central and the party's Youth Affairs spokesperson, Jacinda Ardern, and former Human Rights Commissioner and businesswoman Ella Henry.

Entertanment at this LATE is from the young DJ-producer behind the remarkable @peace recording project, Christoph El Truento. Also, "This is Where We Came From": an exclusive living history of Auckland's premier house of drag, with Buckwheat and Tess Tickle. A fabulous and serious performance.

Doors open 6.30pm, a bar and food will be available.
