Poetry Slams see poets take to the stage in a battle of poetry and performance. Judges from the audience score the first two rounds, with the whole audience voting to decide on the winner. Guest poet Jai MacDonald warms things up at 8pm.

From The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Slam Poetry: “Slam poetry is the brainchild of Marc Smith (so what!) and the blue collar intellectual eccentrics who crammed into the Get Me High Lounge on Monday nights from November 1984 to September 1986 for a wide-open poetry experience. Finger-poppin’ hipster Butchie (James Dukaris) owned the place and allowed anything to happen, and it usually did. The experimenters in this new style of poetry presentation gyrated, rotated, spewed, and stepped their words along the bar top, dancing between the bottles, bellowing out the backdoor, standing on the street or on their stools, turning the west side of Chicago into a rainforest of dripping whispers or a blast furnace of fiery elongated syllables, phrases, snatches of scripts, and verse that electrified the night.”

International slam rules apply: Original work; one poem per round; 3 mins or less; no props; no instruments; time starts when you start speaking.

First prize = 1/2 the koha collected on the night and a near complete set of untouched Islands (only 2 issues missing).

Guest poet Jai MacDonald (& surprise guests): Jai MacDonald is the 2010 Poetry Idol Champion. He is a member of The Literatti pool, most recently performing with the group as part of reTHiNK Possible Worlds. He is the voice part of musical group Meadowlark Lemon Project and is a member of the South Auckland Poets Collective. Jai is co-organiser of the Rising Voices Workshop and Youth Poetry Slam that is set to be an annual event on the poetry calendar.

Entry is free for slammers. Sign up on the night from 7:30. Koha entry for everyone else.

MC: Miriam Barr - her last night MCing Poetry Live. Miriam has been part of the Poetry Live team since the end of 2005.

Open mic will be on in between slam rounds, for those wanting to read without slamming, but we encourage everyone to take part in the opportunity to play around with their words.
