In the final Massey Talks Sustainability for the year, April Bennett will be discussing 'Ka Manawatu te awa, ka Manawaroa to iwi: iwi contributions to freshwater sustainability'.

Collaboration is necessary to resolve complex environmental problems such as the degradation of the Manawatu River. The idea and act of collaborating assumes that the playing field is level and the rules of the game allow everyone to participate equally. In reality, there are power dynamics which influence the extent to which each player gets to make a meaningful contribution. In a collaborative group, these dynamics can be overlooked and therefore go unchallenged.

This presentation discusses the engagement of iwi and hapu in decisions about the restoration of the Manawatu River. It attempts to illuminate how power is operating to affect the contributions of Maori to the sustainability of the awa.

Coffee and tea provided. Bring your lunch.

Friday November 11, 12.30pm, Sound and Vision Zone, Central Library.
