I am a New Zealand artist living in Dunedin and currently working on my first series of paintings for exhibition. I will be showing an exhibition of 9 of my best paintings from a total of 16 that I have been working on over the last six years. I am exhibiting at the Old Kenmure Intermediate School in Kaikorai Valley, Dunedin. A unique property my parents bought in 2001 with spaces that will lend themselves well to exhibiting art.

In my work I have explored the relationship between humans and various animal species, focusing on four specific practices of cruelty. I have presented these disservices in a graphic, often confronting manner through imagery of maps, circles of spears, birds, whales, words and skeletons, among others.

My work draws upon my design background, I studied Design and Anthropology at Otago, and my fascination for animals, their behaviour and biological characteristics. While also wanting a darker content, in this case the use of animals as commodities and the unnecessary pain and suffering we inflict on them for our personal gain.

One such painting ‘Bear with Intestines’ features a partially disemboweled bear inside a border of its own intestines. It is painted entirely of 1 mm high words outlining the cruel practice involved in the bear bile industry, where bile is drained twice daily from the caged bear’s gall bladder with a steel catheter. The wound is often infected and is never able to heal.

To counter such content I have also painted each of the 4 animals featured in the exhibition in a manner simply celebrating them and documenting their biology.

I paint with a 000 size brush to create the fine detail in my paintings, using sepia or black calligraphy ink on 300 gm hot press paper. There is a lot of information hidden in the paintings, an obsessive need of mine to include every detail from my research that interests me, down to mapping co-ordinates.

Each painting has involved weeks of research, studies and mock-ups before I started the final piece. It has taken me approximately 60 to 100+ hours to complete each painting.
