From Straight Ahead to Stratusphunk

Originally conceived as a big-band-in-a-small-package, the six-piece group has since developed into a co-operative venture, with a varied repertoire that now goes well beyond the original concept, including everything from free-form improvisation to straight-ahead swing, with all of the musicians taking care of arranging/conducting/leading in turn. While overseas composer/arrangers such as George Russell, Shorty Rogers, Bill Russo, Quincy Jones, Neal Hefti and Bill Holman are still in the book, the band is also particularly proud of its “Kiwi content”, which features a large number of original compositions and arrangements from such musicians as Mike Nock, Alan Broadbent, Wayne Senior, Neil Dunningham and Stan Knecht, plus transcriptions from trumpeter Ivan Hunter, all giving the band a strong local flavour. The tradition of current players contributing to the repertoire continues, with input from Jim Langabeer, Bruce Morley and Trevor Thwaites in particular.
