“Turning our alley ways into galleries of community artwork”

Since October 2010, Porirua City Council Graffiti Management and 15 local community groups have been working together on “Whaia Te Ara Tika – Follow the Right Path” a community mural project. The access way about 294 meters in length, runs from 165 Mungavin Avenue to the stairway that leads up to McKillop Street, has become a gallery of fabulous artworks created by the community. The project was designed to solve the problem of graffiti and bad behaviour that takes place in the access way by letting the community gain a sense of ownership of the access way by creating a gallery of their own artwork.

The project was divided into three stages: Stage one - Education, managed by Charlie Devenish, began in October which saw art works by the local primary schools and language nests such as Aiga Paia Aoga Amata, Manawanui Kohanga Reo, Holy Family School and Windley School, were painted on to the walls of the walkway entrance. Stage two – Community which began in January, managed by Liana Leiataua-Finau, involved artworks by local community groups and local artists, such as Hope City Church, Cannons Creek Opportunity Centre, Waitangirua Action Group, Wesley Community Action and Housing New Zealand, along with artworks from local artists Chris Apisai, Bob and Pam Johnson and their granddaughter Victoria Johnson were added to the mural.

The final stage of the project will take place at a ‘Celebrate our Community’ fair where the community is invited to celebrate the completion of the project and add their own artwork to the stream which will be painted along the pathway and staircase to link the murals together. The community is invited to bring down their old paints and a paint brush or purchase their paints from P & Z Decorating who will be offering a 40% discount (on any size of paint up to 4 litres) for anyone taking part in the project from Monday 11th of April to Saturday 30th of April. There will be lots of painting, entertainment, fundraising stalls, fun activities and a sausage sizzle on the day. The Mayor Nick Leggett will present certificates to the community groups involved in the project, on the day.

Project Manager Liana Leiataua-Finau says, ‘It’s been such a wonderful project, and the community have worked so hard on creating images and painting, and to have an event like the community fair is the perfect finishing touches to this gigantic masterpiece the community has created’. The ‘Celebrate our Community” fair will take place on Saturday 30th April at 10am to 3pm, at Holy Family School.
