The choir and orchestra of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament will present musical masterpieces from Venice and Vienna. Because the cathedral is now closed for restoration, this concert has been moved to the adjacent Music Centre, and will now be a free event, with a collection to be taken for the Earthquake Fund.

Although the CBS musicians have returned several times to perform in each city, during their first tour in 1990 they were privileged to give concerts in the original location of the works in this concert. St Mark’s Cathedral in Venice was the inspiration for Gabrieli’s joyous Jubilate Deo and Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir, a sprightly psalm setting accompanied by string orchestra. Facing the Venetian waterfront is the Ospedale della Pieta, a Venetian institution for female orphans, which provided exceptional musical tuition by Antonio Vivaldi, violin tutor, and director of their gifted choir and orchestra. Soloists in the Vivaldi Gloria will be Elizabeth Emeleus, Stephanie Waterhouse and Ruth Reid, with Ellen Doyle, cello solo, and David Williams orchestral leader.

Haydn’s Nelson Mass was performed in the original Bergkirche, Eisenstadt. It takes its name from Nelson's victory over Napoleon, who was trying to conquer Egypt, by demolishing the French fleet off Alexandria. When composer and admiral later met at Eisenstadt, Nelson gave Haydn the watch he had worn in the battle, and Haydn gave Nelson the pen with which he had composed his Mass. The work is regarded as his greatest, and most powerful, single composition. Other soloists will include Wally Enright and Chris Whelan, and musical director will be Don Whelan.

CBS Music undertook a highly successful 9th international tour through December and January, experiencing a Lithuanian Christmas in Vilnius, and performing in Lisbon Cathedral on New Year’s Day, and Seville Cathedral on the Feast of the Epiphany. The cathedral music programme maintains an extensive repertoire of masses and motets, sung each Sunday at the 10.30 a.m. Solemn Choral Mass. New members are welcome to the 7.30 pm Wednesday evening rehearsal in the Music Centre. Sight reading ability is expected. Scholarships and awards, worth up to $2000 per year, are available to suitable applicants. Those interested are invited to contact the musical director, Don Whelan, phone 358-5873.
