Three is the magic number. Good things come in threes this month in the upstairs gallery at The Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa. Three local artists are showing their work together at an exhibition entitled 'three' which features paintings and multimedia drawings.

Carlie Blanchett-Burton, Phillip Ball and Elke Finkenauer share a studio at Hungry Creek Art and Craft school at Puhoi. It has been a busy year for them with a successful show at Devonport in July, a mid-year school show and two finalist nominations for Elke and Carlie in the prestigious Wallace Art Awards 2010. Carlie says sharing a studio has been a great experience for them. “It is great to always have other artists around to get feedback from, it helps you to be more objective about your work.”

While the artists share a similarly intense colour palette the work of each artist is strikingly unique, exploring different themes and media. Carlie Blanchett-Burton's work brings together the mediums of painting and textile work in a series of animated trees who interact with each other and the viewer. Phillip Ball’s work is abstract and expressive and explores the idea of Maori guardians who look after the people and sacred places of the land. Elke Finkenauer’s work express a series of observations and satires regarding gender stereotypes, generalisations and contradictions and testing the boundaries of the mediums of drawing, painting and installation.
