The 2010 Lower Waikato River Trout Contest is well under way, following the success of the 2009 event. This year we have had a very welcome influx of sponsors supporting the $3,000 of prizes. The contest is run as a non-profit community event with volunteer labour and assistance from the local business community.

We have also made some big changes to the contest format. Main differences this year- the contest timing of 4th to 10th October is over a full month earlier, and is held over 7 days instead of a weekend, coinciding with the last week of school holidays.

There are 2 sections in prizes- adults and juniors 17 and under, with 11 main prize packages covering top 3 heaviest brown trout both sections, best condition factor trout both sections, overall heaviest rainbow trout, and 2 grand prizes of $500 & $250 for the average weight trout in each section. Many spot and lucky prizes are also available, which means every contestant wins a prize.

As in 2009, the fishing area is the Lower Waikato River from below Karapiro Dam to the Waikato Heads, and all legal methods are allowed- trolling, spinning, fly and bait fishing.

Licences are needed to catch trout, but under 12 year olds are free, and 12-17 year olds can purchase daily licences, or a whole year's licence for $22.50.

A new concept this year is a free pre-competition trout workshop to be held at the Ngaruawahia RSA hall on Saturday October 2nd- 1 - 5pm. This is aimed at the novice trout angler of any age, and will provide a lot of practical advice to any newcomer. Contest entries can be taken at the workshop and licences will be available.

The workshop will cover: preparing trout for smoking, demonstrating a variety of rod setups and tackle selection, methods and evaluating good fishing areas, safety for boat and land based anglers, fly-tying demos of suitable Waikato lures, followed by afternoon tea break (with the smoked trout). Then a quick walk to the Waikato River for practical casting, drag/playing techniques, and a demonstration of trolling on the river. Local and "imported" experts will be present, and there will be a large range of bargain trout flies tied by members of the Hamilton Anglers Club. To finish the day optional dinner is available at the RSA, followed by live band duo "Crossroads" 8-12pm.

The contest starts at dawn on Monday 4th and runs till 2pm on Sunday 10th, and weigh in times are very flexible. We now have 2 sets of calibrated digital scales and measuring equipment, and so Peter Sweetman at Sweetman's Reel Fishin' in Huntly will weigh in trout entries during the business hours of the week 9 - 5 and Saturday morning 9 -12, while John Charteris will take entries from further afield and "after-work" anglers at the Taupiri Tavern from 7pm - 7.30 pm Monday to Saturday. This gives outer - based fishermen a chance to get their catch in promptly during the week.

The final Sunday weigh-in is all based at Taupiri Tavern with a time of 1pm - 3pm sharp finish, and prize-giving runs from 4pm onwards with a free barbeque from Taupiri Tavern and live music/karaoke from "M & M" .

Anyone wishing to enter can phone Sweetman's Reel Fishin' 0800 80 80 81, or call in to their shop. There are also entry forms available at many Waikato fishing tackle stores where the posters have been placed, and most Waikato schools have also been supplied the details.

Note- entry/information and poster forms will also be available online at www.reel-fishin.com and www.huntly.co.nz/events
