National Services Te Paerangi presents a two-day, specialist workshop on 'The conservation of large metal objects displayed outdoors', at the National Army Museum in Waiouru.

This workshop is targeted towards representatives from museum, heritage, and iwi organisations who work directly with metal collections, and who are responsible for the care and maintenance of these collections.

The workshop will be presented by George Bailey from the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

George graduated from the University of Canberra in 1991 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in the Conservation of Cultural Materials, specialising in objects and metals. He has worked at the Australian War Memorial since 1990, and currently holds the position of Senior Objects Conservator.

The workshop will cover:
• Types and causes of deterioration – including inorganic and organic materials
• To operate or not to operate – pros and cons, resources required, health and safety aspects
• Display stands, mounts and supports
• To cover or not to cover – pros and cons, design
• Documentation – manufacturers/service records, photographic evidence, manuals and instruction books, condition reports & treatment records
• Moving large objects – tips on materials, techniques, equipment

• Selection and application of coating materials
• Maintenance plans
• Hazards – chemicals, particulates, biological, mechanical, electrical, radioactivity

There will also be practical sessions involving paint sampling, corrosion removal, lubrication, and coating.

As numbers are limited for this workshop and demand is high, we must restrict registration to those working directly with a metal collection displayed outdoors.

Attendance is restricted to one participant per organisation. Prepayment is mandatory, and payment instructions will be provided on registration.

Register with Tamara Patten: email tamarap@tepapa.govt.nz or call 04 381 7246.

Please provide your name, position, organisation, and contact details, and specify which workshop you would like to attend.

What else do I need to know?
• Bring a pen and paper to take notes
• Bring your lunch (morning and afternoon tea will be provided each day)
• Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for practical sessions working outdoors with metal objects. Be prepared to get your hands dirty!
