An event for everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or religion. The theme for the festival is “coming together as an inclusive community to observe Waitangi Day as New Zealand’s national day".

The river will be the focal point for the day. To officially open proceedings the traditional Maori waka, Katoro will paddle down river, with the VIPs (Waimakariri Mayor, local MPs) aboard. A powhiri (welcome) from local Kaiapoi primary schools will meet the waka once it’s berthed at the wharf and formal speeches will commence lead by Upoko Runanga o Ngai Tuahuriri –Rik Tau. The hongi will complete the traditional formalities for the day and the entertainment, food and festivities will begin.

The International Stage – will be on the river this year, facing the northern-bank of the Kaiapoi River. After the powhiri, the day will open with a Cook Island performing group to recognize the link with our Polynesian friends. This will be followed by another first which is Waimakariri Has Talent! This will showcase the TOP 12 acts from throughout our district (who have auditioned and interviewed to have the right to perform on the stage on the day). While the judges assess the acts there will be three more international acts with a group from South American, Asia and Africa. The winner of Waimakariri Has Talent will be announced and the day will end with a staged battle between Elfs Imperial Army lead by the Newly crowned King Arthur of Ashley and Ha-koro chief Hemi of Tuahiwi who will lead the Maori. This was fun last year and will conclude this year’s event.

Community Stall Central – will be on the Morgan Williams Reserve and will have 50 community and government department stalls with information and free giveaways continuously throughout the day. There will be a number of food stalls featuring international cuisine and a hangi at lunch-time.

Kids Fun Stage – at the same time as all of this we will have a small stage with kids entertainment scheduled throughout the day to keep the little one happy and hassle free.
