Having studied painting at the University of Canterbury and graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Sue Upritchard has been exhibiting regularly since 1999. Her work, which is bound by a motif of collections, has included quilts, cut photographs and cicadas.

She was the recipient of the COCA Artworks (2000) Emerging Artist Series, COCA Guthrey Travel Award (2001) and winner of the COCA 2002 Art Award.

Knit II continues Sue Upritchard’s play with the quotidian. Bringing her life’s fascination with collections into the gallery, Upritchard is known for her large installations of intricate photographic cutouts. Her upcoming exhibition, Knit II, is a bolder more forceful series of work. Upritchard assembles collections of knitting equipment into pieces reminiscent of tribal adornments or toys for teething infants. Unlike her earlier work, by bringing the actual object into the space, Knit II is bursting with energy and is vibrantly colourful. Although spiky and tooth-like, the sculptures are simultaneously full of joyful exuberance.

Upritchard has always collected household objects such as pottery, tea strainers, and sewing paraphernalia without any particular series of work in mind. Her love of arranging and assembling is the foundation of her finished works.
