NZ Film Archive

The Film Archive is pleased to announce the exhibition of new work by Sonya Lacey.

Opening Wednesday 25 August 6pm

Light flickers, wind blows and the recreated pages of Massimo Vignelli's never-used newspaper design tumble away (falling or almost falling) across colourless grass. Scratches and the occasional light-flash remind us that this work was shot on film, yet here the video projection adds another layer to the journey the light has taken.

In another work two large steel benches provide the setting for radio transcripts of false obituaries. Similar to the unused newspaper design, the work points to something with no source. An obituary with no death, a design with no realisation.

Sonya explores issues of mass-production and distribution of information with sculptural plays using objects and light. The transitory nature of ideas and their operation in the world are explored using insubstantial materials - light, newsprint, ink.

Sonya Lacey graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts with an MFA in 2007 and is one of the founders of Newcall Gallery, Auckland. She has exhibited in The Physics Room (Christchurch, 2010), ARTSPACE (Auckland, 2009) and Window (Auckland, 2008) as well as Newcall Gallery.
