Since the first event in 1992, the Weet-Bix Tryathlon has grown from its initial 500 participants to over 17,000 children in the 2008 series. With 11 events the 2008 Weet-Bix Tryathlon was the largest yet, setting the world record for the largest children's triathlon.

The Weet-Bix Tryathlon is all about participation. It aims to give children an opportunity to give it a go, and to encourage happy, healthy lives. The event has been opened to 7 year olds this year, so that anyone between 7 and 15 can take part. Competitors have the option of completing the swim, bike, and run stages on their own, or they can enter in a group of two or three and share the stages accordingly.

The establishment of The Weet-Bix Tryathlon Foundation has enabled even more kids to take part through providing a subsidy or complete funding of entry fees to the event, or the subsidy of necessary equipment. Nominations for a child between the ages of 7 and 15 for the 2009 Weet-Bix Tryathlon series are now open.

Olympic athletes and sporting heroes such as Hamish Carter and potentially two surprise All Blacks will be attending the Nelson event to present medals to participants at the finish line and inspire them to go for gold.
