This course will begin with basic information about the Autism Spectrum Disorders – a term which includes Asperger Syndrome and related conditions. Jen’s main point of difference from other tutors is that Jen grew up with Asperger Syndrome herself. This results in an insider perspective being combined with the currently known facts about Autism Spectrum Disorders. Jen then moves from description and explanation to Strategies and Helpful Hints which have helped her to live with the condition, and which very often help others on the Autism Spectrum. www.aspergers.co.nz
Jen is author of “Congratulations! It’s Asperger Syndrome,” (Jessica Kingsley Publishers).

Presenter: Jen Birch
I was “different from the day I was born.” Physical co-ordination delays and difficulties, over-reactions to things happening around me, extreme timidity and shyness, difficulty in coping with changes to plan, inability to tell lies or to detect dishonesty in others, and a frequent “extreme stubbornness mindset” from which I would not budge, were, when added together, part of the overall picture. My strongest talent was in reading, writing and spelling.
After living through some unsuccessful life experiences, I decided, in my forties, to study for a university degree. Again, I excelled at the reading and writing requirements. One semester before completing my degree, I attended a psychology lecture on a subject then unknown to me: “Asperger Syndrome.” One hour later, I knew that this term explained my life experience. I followed up with formal assessment, thus gaining my official diagnosis, and my B.A. degree, in the same year. I joined Autism NZ (Auckland Branch), and wrote my book “Congratulations! It’s Asperger Syndrome.” I now give talks and professional development courses on Autism Spectrum Disorders.
