The Film Archive’s Auckland office is pleased to announce a new exhibition by Gabriel White: ‘The World Blank’, 1 - 28 April 2009.

OPENING: 31 March 2009 6pm, with a special screening and performance at 6:30pm.

The World Blank is a series of videos by Gabriel White shot in various places around the world since 2001. The works in the series use a stream-of-consciousness 'in situ' approach to video with the artist speaking to a handheld camera as he wanders the globe. The results are associatively arranged into intricate, whimsical mappings of his surroundings. Works in the series so far have been Airpoints (Melbourne), Tongdo Fantasia (South Korea), El Arbol del Tule (Mexico), Journey to the West (China) and Aucklantis (New Zealand).

Smart and unpretentious, White ponders all kinds of things we might also have wondered about, but consigned to the dustbin of “whatever”.
– Tessa Laird, NZ Listener

He takes the place he lives in and interrogates its peculiarities. His formidable erudition comes down, in these latest works, to one man talking on a moving screen – somehow he succeeds in making this the Platonic essence of cinema.
- Jack Ross, The Imaginary Museum

Gabriel White was born in 1971 and lives in Auckland. He has worked as a musician, writer, performer, visual artist and video maker. He has performed with various music and sound groups including Spacesuit and Rotaction and collaborated with Mark Harvey, Steve Abel, Jack Ross, James McCarthy, Ben Holmes and others.
