Hawnay Troof is the DIY gutter-rap/booty-bass/electro/punk/pop solo project of Vice Cooler from Oakland, California. An unstoppable one-man party, whose constant touring and hyperactive live shows have made him a party-starting legend in the underground, managing to steal show after show with his unifying performances.

He has opened for and collaborated (on his numerous and innovative releases) with a “holy-shit!” list of artists including Mika Miko, Gravy Train!!!!, Stereo Total, No Age, Xiu Xiu, High Places, Erase Errata, The Gossip, the Soft Pink Truth, Peaches, the Mae Shi, Lucky Dragons, Glass Candy, Lightning Bolt and Bratmobile among others.

Since his beginnings in 2003, Hawnay Troof was created as a celebration between the performer and listener. Nattily be-suited (or in nuthin’ but candy-colored hotpants) this wildman is all about the sweaty live experience. Hawnay Troof deals in eternally adolescent spastic energy. Troof's beat-driven, stutter-filled jams bounce, throb and pulse with wild abandon and reckless intent.

Double LP “Dollar and Deed” (2006) came with a photobook chronicling previous Hawnay Troof tours. Capturing the most fragile and awkward moments that come with being a modern touring artist, it sold out in one hour via the interweb. Cooler painted the album with pop, noise, punk, funk, grime, club, and classic rock references. Realizing that diversity and refusal of simple classification is strength, “Dollar and Deed” made many critics "Album of the Year" lists.

“Islands of Ayle”, Cooler’s latest release, is like a group-hug between strangers in a sweltering, sweaty show space. Still recognizable as a Hawnay Troof composition, yet even more melodic, dancey, and weird. Demanding that Cooler/Troof is not only one of the most underrated and overlooked artists in the American underground, but a true visionary in the sea of insincere and paint-by-numbers electronic music, and unlike most of his electronic peers who remain within the comfort zone of venues, Hawnay Troof plays high brow art galleries, teenage basements, and barns in the wilderness, to thousands upon thousands at International Festivals, connecting with his audience in small spaces to converting the masses.

His 2005 show at Bodega has become the stuff of legend. Playing in the intimate space of Good Luck, this is no ordinary afterparty, Coolers live energy is something to be experienced.

Tickets only $10, available from Tuesday 16 September from undertheradar.co.nz, Real Groovy and Good Luck. More on the door . . .

Party starts midnight Thursday 25 September . . .
