Kirsty Ruffell is interested in the illusory surface of the picture plane. Working in monochrome, she subtly manipulates the distribution and concentration of paint on this surface to beguiling optical effect.

Painted on circular supports, the resulting pieces seem to imply land or cloud-scapes, or even groupings of strange planets. With references also to biomorphic forms and the microcosmos, Ruffell’s work remains deliberately inconclusive and ambiguous. The viewer is challenged to infer what the work may allude to and how it has been created.

Ruffell completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree majoring in painting at Manukau School of Visual Arts, the University of Auckland last year and was awarded a mentorship with Jill Sorensen for the duration of 2007 by the Artists Alliance.
