‘Ka Mate, Ka Ora’ our nations battle cry - is a new play from Helen Pearse-Otene, (the writer of ‘Battalion’) and co-commissioned by Tribute08 and Te Rakau Hua o te Wao Tapu Trust.

Kimi wants to heal
Sweet doesn’t give a damn
Cherry can’t take it back
Hohepa remains haunted

40 years later, these former soldiers, mates in war and peace, still carry the wounds of two wars: one fought in the paddy fields of Vietnam, the other in the consciousness of a nation that wanted to forget.

Estranged from their own families who struggle with the fallout that came home with them, and horrified by what has befallen their mate Hohepa, Kimi, Sweet and Cherry decide to embark on one last mission to try and put things right – with surprising results.

Helen is the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, and writes of the hopes and dreams, challenges and despair of a New Zealand family affected by the aftermath of the Vietnam War. It looks at the different challenges that three generations face, to find a sense of hope for a better future.

Co-directed by one of New Zealand's most experienced actors and directors, Jim Moriarty, (from ‘Close to Home’ and ‘Michael James Manaia’), Jim sinks his teeth into one of the most dividing periods of New Zealand's history, and explores where we have surfaced almost 40 years on.

Jim has lead Te Rakau for the past 18 years, with over 1.5 million New Zealanders having experienced his works in theatres, schools, marae and prisons around the country. This is theatre of the people, for the people.

‘Ka Mate, Ka Ora’ is world premiering at Capital E in Wellington from 21 May to 1 June, before preparing to tour the country for the next two to three years, as ‘Battalion’ did, (having been viewed by more than 25,000 Wellingtonians).

This theatre production is just one of the exterior events surrounding Tribute08 - a Vietnam Commemoration happening at Queens Birthday weekend in Wellington.
