Everybody loves a good crime story. Our newspapers proliferate with stories of horrific crimes that happen on a daily basis. Yet the construction of a good crime novel requires many skills. The author must be not only a good storyteller, but part detective, pathologist and, interestingly, part crim.

New Zealander Joan Druett, Australian Peter Temple, British Mo Hayder and Frenchman Philippe Claudel talk about the temptations of crime and the intricacy of plotting a satisfactory heist, stabbing or assassination. What lies behind our fascination with crime that motivates us to both ingest it with the morning paper and then as bedtime reading?

Chair: Mike Johnson.
