On his 18th birthday, Canadian Ryan Knighton was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that slowly blinded him over fifteen years. His debut poetry collection "Swing in the Hollow" (2001) was a critical success, and in 2006 he published "Cockeyed", a darkly comic and observant memoir about the trials and misadventures that have made him an off-beat writer and an even more off-beat blind man.

He is the subject of "As Slow As Possible", a documentary (see Event 46).

In 2009 Ryan plans to publish "Little Light of Mine", an account of his experience of fatherhood, and he is currently writing a travel book based on sensory experiences.

Ryan slows down for an hour to talk to Kim Hill.
